MP wants the government to stop an oil refinery in Lysekil

It was in June that the Supreme Court of Lands and Environment gave Preem the green light to proceed with plans to expand an oil refinery in Lysekil.

The decision has sparked a great debate and the issue now belongs to the government, which will decide the issue.

The Green Party now believes the expansion would mean such large increases in emissions that Sweden’s climate work is at risk, and therefore wants the plans to stop altogether, it reports. Swedish radio Ekot.

– The important thing now is that the government somehow stops this expansion, because it is so damaging to the climate that it threatens our climate goals and our joint climate work, says Lorentz Tovatt (MP), Ekot’s climate policy spokesperson.

“Yesterday’s technology”

At the same time, he believes that the opinion of the Land and Environment Court is only a basis for the government.

– The government is free to make its own assessment. There you can just consider other social interests, especially the weather, he tells SR.

According to Lorentz Tovatt, the plans are based, among other things, on outdated technology that would increase emissions. But if the question may result in the Green Party leaving government, it is too early to answer, he tells Ekot.

– It is not only about the Green Party, but the opposite. Both the Riksdag and the government have said that we must achieve our climate goals, we must have joint climate work to tackle the climate crisis. And that is what is now threatened by this expansion.
