There are several things to keep in mind before putting on a mouth guard.
Soon it will be the oral protection that is applied. At least by public transport during rush hours. But what should you really think about before, during and after wearing a mouth guard? Here are some solid tips.
The product or not of the mouth guard has been kept and soaked for months in Sweden. The status of research on how much a mouth guard actually helps is still uncertain. But now, in the end, the Public Health Agency recommends mouth protection in public transport during peak hours, that is, when it can be assumed that most people travel at the same time.
The big problem with mouth guards is that they don’t protect you very well, but mainly others. Therefore, everyone must use them for it to be effective.
– They can be a complement, but not a solution, tells TT Åsa Melhus, professor of clinical bacteriology at Uppsala University and active at Uppsala University Hospital.
Both nose and mouth
It may seem obvious that the mouth guard must also cover both the nose and mouth for it to have any effect. Despite this, there are surprisingly many who let the mouth guard only cover the mouth.
One of the most important aspects for those who use oral protection is hand hygiene.
– If you watch TV shows where people wear masks, you see how many people are sitting and adjusting the mouth guards with their hands, pulling them down when they don’t want to wear them and pulling them back up. Then the virus reaches the hands, and the hands are the best tools to spread the infection, Åsa Melhus told SVT Nyheter.
Put in a plastic bag
Therefore, the mouth guard should never be touched. When taking off and putting on, just touch the straps or ties. After use, the mask should be discarded and placed in a plastic bag so that no one comes into contact with it.
There are several different types of mouth guards on the market in different materials. Cloth masks can work, but they should be multi-layered in that case. The mouth guard should preferably have a CE mark, which is a standard that exists in Europe and which means that the product has been verified for quality. This does not mean that you can be absolutely sure that it protects against viruses.
