Tens of thousands of people demonstrated on Sunday against Alexander Lukashenko and his government. The protests have taken place every weekend since the criticized elections on August 9.
At least 53 people have been arrested on Sunday in connection with the protests in Belarus, according to the human rights organization Vjasna. Demonstrations are taking place in several cities, and in the country’s second largest city, Gomel, the police have used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the demonstration.
Protests against President Alexander Lukashenko have lasted seven consecutive weekends since the criticized August 9 elections. Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Minsk on Sunday to protest that Lukashenko had been sworn in as president on Wednesday.
The unannounced ceremony drew strong criticism from the EU, the UK and France. In an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, the French president says that the Belarusian administration cannot accept the “logic of democracy”.
-It is obvious that he has to resign, says Emmanuel Macron.
Mr Lukashenko has not yet shown signs of resignation and has so far been able to count on the political support of Russia.
