More police officers and police students are under investigation for drug offenses, according to an investigation by the Police Department’s Special Investigations Department, SU, Police magazine writes.

Arvill believes that one reason more police officers are being investigated for drug offenses is the increased liberal attitude towards drugs.

– If you look internationally, we are moving towards an increasingly liberal attitude against drugs, especially among young people. The risk is that this will become a more common problem within the Police because we are dealing with important recruits, Department Head Ebba Sverne Arvill tells the Police newspaper.

She also believes that the increase in the legal prescription of narcotic drugs may be a possible explanation.

– It may happen that those who don’t think they are getting enough from the doctor turn to the illegal market to get their medications. And if it’s a police officer, he or she risks being exposed to criminals, Arvill says.

In 2019, there was a marked increase in inbound advice on drug possession and use among Police Authority employees, and especially the police, according to the SU. The number of police students increased further.

In 2016–2018, 15–20 reports of drug-related crimes were received per year. Last year, the figure was close to 40.

It is mainly about own use and possession, but also about doping and suspicions about sales.
