More became eligible for high school during the pandemic, the largest increase among children

The crown crisis has not negatively affected the final grades, on the contrary. More in year 9 could apply to upper secondary school compared to last year. At the same time, there is an awareness that canceled national tests have made it difficult for teachers to grade students.

– We know that there are some problems with the qualification and that it is not completely equivalent. But there is no reason to believe that teachers’ ability to grade would have deteriorated in the spring, says Peter Fredriksson.

Of the 114,000 students who graduated from elementary school this spring, 85.6% of them were eligible for upper secondary school. The greatest positive development is observed among children, with an increase of 1.5 percentage points. But even though the gaps are narrowing, girls generally keep getting better.

– The fact that girls generally perform a little better than boys has been a constant for a long time and the pattern looks the same in other countries, says Fredriksson.

“The differences are excessively large”

The level of education of the parents is of great importance. Eligibility is 93 percent among students whose parents have a college education, compared to 77 percent among students whose parents have only graduated from high school.

– The differences in Sweden based on the socioeconomic origin of the students are still excessively large. Breaking this pattern and improving outcomes for under-resourced students is therefore the Swedish school’s biggest challenge, says Peter Fredriksson.

“It’s very important”

Eligibility also differs based on immigration history. It is mainly how long a student has been in a Swedish school that matters.

Students who emigrated to Sweden before the start of regular school have an eligibility of 85 percent, which is very close to the national average. But if the student has immigrated between years 1 and 5, the eligibility drops to 68 percent.

Peter Fredriksson says schools need to develop work with teaching for students entering the school system late.

– It is of great importance for the students themselves, but also for society and for integration, he says.
