Scammers change tactics as bank security systems become more advanced.

According to the special police investigator, more and more victims are older people.

– We see that more people focus on people who use bank tellers, says Lotta Mauritzon of crime prevention.

Aftonbladet has been in contact with several Nordea clients who criticize how the bank has acted after they ended up in the clutches of scammers.

Lotta Mauritzon is a Crime Prevention Officer at the National Police Fraud Center. She claims that no bank stands out in the wave of fraud reports she and her colleagues handle.

– We have looked for connections to see if any bank is more affected, but we have not found anything. The biggest banks are also the ones with the worst hit customers, he says.

Many older people are exposed

There is also no indication that Nordea’s security system is more vulnerable than its competitors, according to Mauritzon.

– Each bank has its own solutions. We don’t have full transparency, but no bank stands out significantly.

Instead, Lotta Mauritzon highlights two other trends: a growing proportion of the vulnerable are older, and scammers are more likely to target customers who use bank tellers.

– Previously, about 70 percent of those affected were older people. That proportion has risen to 80 percent.

The focus on bank tellers is probably related to the fact that the system with a bank identification has become more secure.

– QR codes and other things have been introduced to make remote logins difficult. This makes it more difficult for people who want to access other people’s money.

Tip: block the card

To reduce the risk of exposure, it is important to handle card numbers and codes carefully. Nor should you ever use a bank identification at the request of another person, or buy in online stores that seem suspicious.

Lotta Maruitzon believes that it is advisable to have the card blocked for online purchases by default.

– When you buy something online, temporarily unlock it and then close it again. It’s a good habit, he says.
