More and more women and girls are involved in gang crime. According to the Stockholm Police survey, the number of women in gangs has doubled in a couple of years, and they play a much more driving role than before.

– From having previously seen a passive girlfriend, we now see an active accomplice taking her own independent role to achieve power status and her own financial gain, says Magnus Mowitz, acting head of the intelligence section in the Police Region from Stockholm, to SVT Crime of the week.

The police have opened their eyes to development, among other things, thanks to being able to read the previously encrypted communication between gang criminals on the Inrochat app.

According to the survey conducted by the intelligence section of the police region, there are about 50 women in the gangs. The women are full members, participate in organizing and planning and are actively involved in drug trafficking, transportation and money laundering, according to police.

– It is also about minimizing risk, because historically the activities of the police have not been directed at women, says Magnus Mowitz to SVT.

However, women do not appear to be as actively involved in the most serious violent crimes such as shootings and explosions.
