Even the best pole vaulter in the world can feel the opposite. In recent weeks, Armand Duplantis has been on a record search. The goal is Sestriere’s 26-year-old Sergei Bubka’s international record. Not far from the Italian port, in Lausanne, Duplantis was close to the record. Then the 20-year-old was forced to stop his hunt when the sun set and no other light solution could be found.
“As if things were against me”
Today it was the wind that reached “Mondo”. In the same arena where he took the European Championship gold two years earlier, the bar was asked to hit a record 6.15, but the headwind made it almost impossible to tackle the height.
– It feels a bit like things are going against me. It seems they don’t want me to break the record. Maybe it’s fate. I don’t know, it feels weird. It’s a shame, says “Mondo” to SVT Sport.
Otherwise, Duplantis felt in very good shape before today’s competitions in Berlin.
– I felt good when I jumped. It feels like you’re in a nice little beat. It was a shame that the wind was in the exact opposite direction that she wanted, she tells SVT Sport.
Now only two more chances await Duplantis to succeed with the long-awaited record list. The Diamond League competitions in Rome (9/17) and Doha (9/25) are the last stop of the outdoor season for the 20-year-old.
– I won’t worry about things I can’t control like the wind and the weather. I’ll prepare as best I can. I’ll be ready to do my best, it should be a good thing, says “Mondo”.
