It is not yet known how the coronavirus affects the fetus during pregnancy if the mother is sick with covid-19. But the issue is currently being studied in Singapore, where a child with antibodies was born.

It is not yet clear how the coronavirus affects the fetus during pregnancy, if the mother becomes infected. The issue is being studied in Singapore, among other places, where doctors discovered antibodies earlier this year in a newborn baby whose mother was diagnosed with Covid-19.

For example, researchers are trying to find out if fetuses can be infected by the virus in utero and develop antibodies on their own, or if the antibodies are passed on from the mother. It is also important to find out whether the antibodies provide effective protection against new infections and, if so, for how long, one of the research leaders tells Reuters.

Based on the few cases reported so far, it appears to be highly unusual for babies to have severe COVID-19 symptoms.

According to the researchers, the antibodies from the baby in Singapore remained for a couple of months after the mother’s infection, which is considered a good sign.
