On Tuesday evening, Inspector Pia Holmström walks into Beirut Café at the Östermalm market. With her are the Minister of Social Affairs and the Minister of Finance of Stockholm, Anna König Jerlmyr (M). Owner Elias Karroum answers the inspector’s questions on how the restaurant handles the corona situation and recommendations on congestion.

– The operator has taken the necessary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, says Pia Holmström, inspector of the Stockholm environmental administration.

The most common is that the administration conducts inspections without prior notice, that is, strikes without prior notice, to obtain a more accurate picture of the business.

– We have a function in the Stockholm environmental administration where you can make complaints. So far, we have received around 1,500 complaints from the public since March here the covid started, says Pia Holmström.

The restaurant currently has no guests, but the venue is far from empty – various media outlets, press secretaries, and guards are on site.

– If you keep a distance of one meter between different companies, that’s fine, says Pia Holmström.

Tonight’s inspection is only one in a row since the pandemic broke out. And the comments may seem numerous: 34 percent of the 2,011 inspections in the city of Stockholm have resulted in comments. 20 have had to close according to Anna König Jerlmyr.

TT: Have you slowed down your visits to restaurants and pubs since the pandemic broke out?

– On the contrary. I have probably never eaten as much in a restaurant as I do now to try to support the industry. Yesterday I was in a restaurant for the last time. It was nice to see that it’s the restaurant owners here who really stick to the recommendations, he says.

Lena Hallengren tells TT in connection with the inspection that she is happy that so many restaurants and eateries have been able to be open, despite the difficult situation of the pandemic.

– Overall, I think it seemed to work. We also have an inspection that the municipality has carried out since last summer. And you really criticize, you demand action and in the worst case you can also close places. I think you must feel that you dare to visit restaurants that take care of themselves, says Hallengren.
