Minister of Education: Can you close schools after the Christmas holidays?

In the spring, the Riksdag gave the government the right to close the country’s schools if necessary to stop the corona infection.

Last week, the number of new infections was higher in the 17-19-year-old age group – 18%, compared with 10% in all age groups.

Now the Minister of Education is faltering Anna Ekström (S) because it can be important to close schools after the Christmas holidays if the infection increases after the holidays.

The education minister believes that students should take responsibility during the Christmas holidays and when schools open, they should keep their distance, stay home in case of symptoms and avoid things like hugs and parties, she says.

– Our schools are not built for a pandemic. But the more high school students can do their best to follow the rules, the greater the chances that we can keep schools open, Anna Ekström tells Expressen.

This spring recommended the government of the country’s high schools, municipal adults, polytechnics, colleges and universities to provide distance education to curb the infection.

Anna Ekström does not rule out the possibility of talking about distance education after Christmas.

– If necessary, we will not hesitate to close schools, he says.

According to Anna Ekström’s press secretary Björn Fridén, it may be relevant to close all kinds of schools, both primary and secondary schools and colleges.

– This is the same thing you’ve been saying all along. There are no concrete plans to close schools, but already in March, the government acquired the authority to do so if necessary, he tells DN.
