During the crown crisis, Swedish consumer loans have exploded.

Development worries Finance Minister Mark Åsa Lindhagen.

– It is outrageous that companies make money from people’s accidents, he says.

Several agencies are sounding the alarm that Swedes are increasingly borrowing for consumption. According to Finansinspektionen, it is mainly the growing e-commerce that is driving the development.

– We see an explosive increase in purchases with invoice, credit or credit, said CEO Erik Thedéen when the figures were presented.

This is reflected in the fact that the giant company Klarna, which handles much of the online payments, sends a record number of clients to the Enforcement Officer.

“You can have problems for a long time”

New Minister for Financial Markets Åsa Lindhagen (MP) reacts strongly to Aftonbladet’s review.

– I think it is very important that the subject be addressed. People who go into excess debt can have serious problems for a long time, he says.

– It can be easy to choose to get the product first and then pay. If companies are trying to lure consumers into expensive payment plans, I think it’s outrageous.

Klarna wants to see debt records

This summer, a new law was introduced that prohibits online stores and payment companies from listing credit purchases over direct payment options.

Finansinspektionen, FI, is now reviewing the consequences of the law.

– It will be interesting to see what the authority comes up with. FI also looks at how loan companies act when it comes to credit testing, says Åsa Lindhagen.

– These issues are very important to the government.

Both politicians and industry representatives have called for a central debt registry. Klarna supports that idea too.

“It is a problem that we cannot see the total debt. This increases the risk that an indebted person may make a purchase on credit that they then have difficulty paying back, “writes press manager Niklas Gillström in an email to Aftonbladet.

Åsa Lindhagen is careful when commenting on that topic.

– If it is necessary to adopt new measures to reduce the risk of people ending up in difficult situations, we are always open to analyze it.

– We have a responsibility as politicians, but companies also have a responsibility not to make money from people’s misfortune.

Klarna’s clients had debts to the Enforcement Officer of SEK 509 million last year.
