President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency to release federal resources to Texas, where temperatures of minus 22 degrees have been measured.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signing Twitter that the Texas power grid is undamaged, but that it is the companies that supply the electricity that have problems.

The states of Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma have also been affected by the cold front, as has northern Mexico.

There have been several traffic accidents due to icy roads. In Houston, Texas, about 120 traffic accidents were reported on Sunday alone, according to the BBC.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), more than 150 million Americans are affected by road and weather warnings due to the cold. NWS also claims that various temperature records have been or will be set regarding minimum levels during this cold period, the BBC reports.

Up to 30 inches of snow is expected to fall over the area known as the Southern Plains, which spans parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
