SVT receives millions of crowns to protect employees from physical threats and attacks.
Hosts like Nike Nylander and Carina Bergfeldt are mentioned as extra vulnerable, but so are those who run children’s shows.
– We have many more people who need bodyguards to feel safe, says Peter de Verdier, chief financial officer and head of security.
SVT receives 5.14 billion SEK from the government budget. This is an increase of SEK 100 million compared to last year.
Some of the money goes to greater security and preparation. According to SVT CFO and Chief Security Officer Peter de Verdier, threats against employees have increased considerably in recent years.
– We have IT attacks against our systems, we have hate on the net against everyone who speaks for SVT and occasional physical attacks. Physical attacks are unusual, but still at the level that we fortify the entrances to our offices so they can withstand attacks, he says.
Excluding IT attacks, SVT’s security department investigates an average of 35 threats per day, which they consider serious enough to examine more closely.

Wolf and forest management
In the case of really serious threats, the protection of the bodyguards can be relevant. Peter de Verdier does not want to comment on which people have bodyguards. However, he recently mentioned the threats against newscaster Nike Nylander as an example of very serious incidents. Nylander was threatened after an interview with SD leader Jimmie Åkesson.
– You can also see Carina Bergfeldt. She came out with a neutral news that she will have a talk show It resulted in a lot of hatred based on what she had done before. Of course, we are seeing if it is that serious, so we have to act, says Peter de Verdier.
Serious threats can range from people reporting on wolves and forest management to children’s program leaders addressing a topic that irritates people, says Peter de Verdier.
– Basically you can report anything and you will receive threats against you.
Net hatred of China
SVT also believes that a modified security policy situation means that more money must be spent on protection. An example is a storm of hatred after the performance of the satire program “Swedish News” about China.
– Our channels were completely infested with Chinese comments of a very negative nature, says Peter de Verdier.
The extra money will also be spent on strengthening news coverage in areas with poor following.
How much do you spend on security?
– We can’t get into that. Instead, these are amounts we’d like to spend on programs, says Peter de Verdier.
The reason SVT receives more money is partly an increase due to inflation and partly because the company no longer pays for Radiotjänst AB, now closed. However, according to Peter de Verdier, the latter part will be less than what is stated in the government’s decision, ie 60 million SEK instead of 100 million SEK.
