The city has agreed to pay the equivalent of approximately SEK 229 million to the family. It is the largest sum ever paid in an out-of-court settlement for a case that is deemed the cause of someone else’s death, according to the family’s attorney, Benjamin Crump.
– The death of a black person caused by police violence can no longer be described as an insignificant event. This sends the message that black lives count, Crump said at a news conference.
George Floyd, 46 he was unarmed when he was arrested on suspicion of attempting to use counterfeit bills. In a video of the intervention in Minneapolis, the handcuffed Floyd is heard repeatedly yelling that he cannot breathe.
After more than eight minutes under the lap of the police, he fell silent. A privately ordered autopsy has shown that Floyd died of suffocation.
“We are relieved that this part of our fight for justice for my brother George Floyd is over,” his sister Bridgett Floyd said in a statement.
The trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin, who put his knee to George Floyd’s neck, began recently.
Floyd’s violent death set off shock waves around the world and has prompted many black Americans to testify about racism and police violence in the United States.
