“The risk of having to commit or participate in war crimes is a basis for receiving protection in Sweden,” states the Swedish Immigration Board. Stock Photography.

The Swedish Migration Agency has carried out a new assessment on Syria and people seeking asylum in Sweden. According to the authority, certain people who return to the country run the risk of being called up to state military service and thus contribute to the commission of crimes.

“All recruits are now at risk of being forced to commit or participate in war crimes. The risk of having to commit or participate in war crimes is a basis for protection in Sweden,” says Carl Bexelius, deputy director of law for the authority, in a press release.

These people are at risk of persecution and, according to the Swedish Immigration Board, they should be granted refugee status in Sweden.

In case of exceptions, an assessment of the individual’s need for protection must be carried out.
