“I hope it is a good experience and a good indicator of his position.”
That was Mikael Ymer’s reaction after being attracted to world coach Novak Djokovic in the first round of the French Championship of the Grand Slam tournament.
For the 22-year-old Swede, ranked 80, the match on center court, however, was no more experience.
The eleven years older The Serbian world point guard dominated, winning in straight sets and ensuring Ymer got an early travel pass of the tournament in Paris.
Ymer lost three service games in the first set and 22 minutes later Djokovic had easily won 6-0.
In the second, the Swede won the first game, breaking to 2-2 and then enduring the blow of the match when he sent Djokovic’s lobby back between his own legs and won the score at 30-30.
Ymer smiled big after the battle and Djokovic applauded, but the Serbian won the game, moved up to a 4-2 lead and took home the second set at 6-2.
The third was a bit more even, but Djokovic won in the end at 6-3, thus securing the advance after just three sets played.
The French championships are generally played on the changeover from May to June in a hot Paris before summer. But when the pandemic brought all sports to a halt, organizers were quick to move the competition to September-October.
For Novak Djokovic, who initially played in a thermal shirt under the pole, Ricardas Berankis, Lithuania, is waiting in the second round.
