Recent conflicts and developments in Gothenburg’s criminal gang environment, with shootings and barricades of their own, made it more relevant for Interior Minister Mikael Damberg to pay a visit.
– Given that Gothenburg has had a period of red conflicts, serious conflicts in gang settings, I wanted to hear locally how the police appeal and prioritize and how to work with the municipality and owners to achieve a long-term change of course, he says.

On Monday Mikael Damberg toured Angered, from Hjällbo to Hammarkullen.
– There, municipal housing companies make large investments to eliminate the insecurity that exists in the area. I also had a discussion with social services who told me how they work to catch young people who are at risk of being harmed in criminal settings. Mikael Damberg talks about an expansive phase and a state with bigger muscles. He believes that the most important measure in the short term is to increase the resources of the police.
– Police officers are employed every six months at this time. More cameras are being installed to increase security, we are tightening penalties and giving the police new powers. We expect 150 new cameras across the country this year, especially in exposed areas, he says.
Witness protection
Another measure that the Minister of the Interior highlights as particularly important is to break the cultures of silence:
– We seek support and protection for witnesses and also investigate stricter penalties for abuse in court, where witnesses are threatened. Anonymous witnesses and forensic witnesses are also being investigated, this is a complete package of measures.
