Microsoft is starting to test multitasking in Office for Ipad

Microsoft has started beta testing of a new feature that can make working with large documents and presentations in Word and Powerpoint on iPad much easier.

One of the new features in Ipad OS 13 is the ability for app developers to add support for opening two windows with the same app, in iPad side-by-side mode for multitasking. You should now get to Word and Powerpoint (Excel is not mentioned in Microsoft’s blog post on the news, probably because the need is less).

You can access the function in three ways:

  • Dragging a file from Recent, Shared and Open view to the edge of the screen.
  • By displaying the dock while Word or Powerpoint is open and then pressing and holding the same apps icon until it “loosens” and you can drag it to the edge of the screen.
  • When viewing Recent, Shared and Open, select a file, press the More button and select Open in a new window.

Interestingly, Word was one of the apps that Craig Federighi used to display the news at WWDC 2019, but it took developers 10 months to get it.

If you want to test the feature already, you can join the Microsoft beta program through Testflight (for Word and Powerpoint, respectively).
