On November 3, 2016, 20-year-old Michelle Ekholm was released from the treatment home where she was treated.

She had the drug methadone with her.

– They wrote her down and put her on the street in Lund – she who lived in Stockholm – without a mobile phone, money and a train ticket. Without planning of Social Services. I mean the boss committed a misdemeanor, mother Anne-Sofie Ekholm has previously said.

That same night, a security guard found her outside who considered that she was under the influence of something and therefore the police arrested her and took her into custody.

The next morning, she was found dead in the cell.

She had died from methadone drug intoxication.

The boss was prosecuted

At the end of June this year, the then head of the department of the treatment residence was prosecuted for having discharged Michelle Ekholm, without the goal of care having been met.

– He ended up in a city that was not his hometown. Where he didn’t actually have any safety net, chamber prosecutor Lisa Åberg had previously told SVT.

The Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (IVO) and an investigation by Lex Sarah reached similar conclusions.

The accused chief has denied the crime and refers to the fact that Michelle Ekholm was discharged to receive help via psychiatry.

On Friday, the department head was acquitted of misconduct.

“According to the investigation, Michelle Ekholm was not in an acute situation of substance abuse. In such circumstances, the discharge decision has no legal basis.” says in the verdict of the Lund District Court.

This has happened

• Michelle Bureland Ekholm was found on the street in Lund in November 2016 and later died in police custody. According to the autopsy, Michelle likely died of methadone drug intoxication.

• In 2017, prosecutors launched a preliminary investigation against detention personnel. No one was held responsible for Michelle’s death.

• But the death has also led to a JO report. And in their statement to the Ombudsman, the police admit that the supervision of women did not follow the regulations.

It should have been seen at least once every quarter, but surveillance film shows that at one point in the night it took just over 40 minutes.

• Also, there are no notes on what has been observed and done in connection with the inspection. “Of course this is not acceptable,” write the police lawyers.

• The head of the department is processed in the LVM accommodation that, the day before his death, released Michelle.
