Vandalism, violence and mayhem. It has prompted Miami Beach to declare a state of emergency and impose a curfew since hordes of young partiers flocked to the city to celebrate spring break, the so-called “spring break.”
Miami Beach is tightening the rules in an attempt to control young people who have traveled to the destination to celebrate their spring break.
A year after the coronavirus prevented free youth from celebrating “spring break,” the party returns with a message in Miami Beach, Florida. And this time around, unusually many people seem to have gone into town to enjoy the heat and loosen up after months of isolation due to COVID-19.
Although some US universities and colleges have canceled their vacations, students from about 200 schools are expected to come here during the vacation period, which runs from late February to mid-April.
The party therefore takes weeks, and with about 13% of the US population having been vaccinated, the feeling that the pandemic is under control is widespread.
– Covid is over, honey! Shouts a man, wrapped in the United States flag and with his face painted like the Joker, in a video that has been published on social networks.
Florida has registered more than 2 million cases of covid-19. Senator Ron DeSantis has described the state, which recently hosted the Super Bowl sports party, as an “oasis of freedom” during the pandemic and has prevented local governments from imposing certain virus restrictions. However, health experts advise against mixing in large crowds, especially given the spread of new virus variants.
Many describe how the atmosphere in Miami Beach is reminiscent of a rock concert, with so many crowds that it is no longer possible to see the asphalt on the sidewalks or the grass on the ground. And in recent days, the party has grown increasingly out of control with reports of violence, vandalism and general chaos in the footsteps of the youth.
On Saturday, Miami Beach declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew starting at 8 p.m. in South Beach, which is the center of nightlife. Some roads are also closed. Some hotels have announced that they stop selling food and beverages out of concern for the safety of their employees.
According to Gelber, more people have gone to Miami Beach on this vacation than in previous years. He claims that the situation has deteriorated a bit each day and that the pandemic means that the city faces an even greater challenge.
– If you come here because you have been caught and you want to let go, and you think that everything is fine, please do not come here. We have extra police everywhere, we will arrest people and we have already done that, says Gelber.
– If you come to party, go somewhere else. We don’t want you here.
