Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is offering asylum to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
The offer comes the same day that a British judge decides that Assange is so suicidal that he cannot be extradited to the United States.
– Assange is a journalist and deserves a chance. We will protect him, says López Obrador and affirms that he wants the country’s foreign minister to ask Great Britain to release Assange, so that Mexico can grant him asylum.
This is not the first time the president has defended Assange. A year ago, he called on the British to release Assange and called the arrest torture.
His move Monday was not greeted with open arms by the United States.
“López Obrador appears to be making an effort to damage relations between the United States and Mexico just as Joe Biden prepares to move into the White House,” said Mark Feierstein, senior adviser to President Barack Obama.
The United States is expected to appeal the British court’s decision. On Monday night, the country’s Justice Ministry expressed “extreme disappointment” at the verdict.
The United States accuses Julian Assange of, among other things, data breaches and espionage, due to the large amount of classified material that Wikileaks has published.
