Mexikos president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Congratulations from world leaders to Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the United States.
But neighboring Mexico is waiting, and from the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, he is calm.
A deluge of congratulations has been sent from heads of state or government around the world following the news that Joe Biden is winning the US presidential election. The list of countries includes Japan, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Venezuela, and many more.
But a congratulation from the president of neighboring Mexico is missing. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says it is too early and he wants to wait until all the legal issues have been resolved.
– We don’t want to be careless. We do not want to act carelessly and we want to respect the self-determination of people and their rights, he says at a press conference, news agencies report.
– We have a very good relationship with both candidates, he adds.
“Great respect”
Donald Trump’s campaign has filed lawsuits in several states, with accusations of vote rigging. But so far, the president has been unable to present any concrete evidence, and US media outlets have unanimously declared Joe Biden the winner.
Trump’s relationship with Mexico has been cold at times. Especially since one of his electoral promises in 2016 was to build a wall against Mexico, a wall for which he wanted Mexico to pay.
However, the leftist leader López Obrador, who took office two years ago, has managed to maintain a cordial relationship with Trump. He even visited his colleague on his first trip abroad as president.
– President Trump has shown us great respect and we have reached very good agreements, says López Obrador, but also points out that the same applies to Joe Biden.
“Trump of Brazil” in silence
The leader of the second bastard in Latin America, Brazil, is silent. President Jair Bolsonaro has been tweeting and appearing live on social media since the announcement, not to mention the US presidential election.
Some Brazilian media outlets are reporting, citing government sources, that the Bolsonaro government will not recognize Biden’s victory until the legal tours that Trump has threatened are resolved in court.
Right-wing leader Jair Bolsonaro has been called the Trump of Brazil and has openly supported his colleague’s re-election campaign.
He also expressed his discontent with Joe Biden before the presidential election. After the Democratic presidential candidate in the first electoral debate against Donald Trump said that the United States should pressure Brazil to better protect the Amazon rainforest, Bolsonaro responded by calling the declaration “catastrophic and unnecessary,” reports AFP.
“What a shame, Mr. John Biden!” The Brazilian president wrote on social networks, misspelling the name.
Mature congratulates
However, two of Brazil’s former presidents, Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff, have chosen to congratulate Biden.
“I welcome Biden’s victory and hope that he is guided by the humanistic values that characterized his campaign,” Lula wrote on Twitter.
Overnight, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga also joined the list of congratulatory world leaders on Twitter, where he wrote that he wants a stronger alliance between the United States and Japan.
Venezuela’s political rivals, President Nicolás Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaidó, acknowledged Biden’s victory overnight.
Venezuela “will always be ready for dialogue” with the American people and the United States government, writes President Maduro, whose regime has had several new sanctions imposed under the Trump administration.
Opposition leader Juan Guaidó, close to the United States, says he and Biden “will work together to guarantee the reconstruction of democracy, freedom and human rights for the Venezuelan people.”
Congratulations also come from Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who have had close relations with Donald Trump. In a post on Twitter, Netanyahu calls Biden “a great friend of Israel” and addresses both him and the incoming vice president, Kamala Harris.
“I look forward to working with the two of you to further strengthen the special alliance between the United States and Israel.”
Netanyahu also thanked Donald Trump for “the friendship he has shown to the state of Israel and to me personally.”
