Request the use of a mouth guard at Karlsplatz in Munich.

Closed theaters and cinemas, restaurants with bars and basically stops for foreign tourists.

It is the demand of the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to stop the spread of the infection, but first she must convince her colleagues in the Länder.

Merkel’s list of measures to break the negative development of the crown is long and partly dramatic.

Since November 4, the German Chancellor wants, among other things, to impose strict contact restrictions in public places across the country, so that people can only spend time with relatives and members of another household.

Closures and bans

Theaters, opera houses and concert halls are closed, as are casinos, cinemas, gyms, swimming pools and brothels, according to Merkel’s plan, which the daily Bild has read. In principle, all entertainment events are prohibited. Restaurants and bars can only offer takeout and home delivery.

Foreign tourists should be kept away from Germany by a general accommodation restriction: only “necessary and non-tourism related” hotel visits should be allowed.

However, schools and preschools may remain open. Businesses that are financially affected by the restrictions, which are due until the end of November, will receive compensation from the state.

The responsibility of the Länder

However, it is not certain that Merkel will be listened to for her demands. Control of the epidemic is, in principle, on the table of the Länder, and the government’s ability to enforce national bans and injunctions is limited. That is why Merkel holds regular meetings with state leaders, who have chosen different lines during the crown pandemic.

While, among others, the strongman of Bavaria, Markus Söder, is behind uniform and strict rules for the whole country, Bodo Ramelow of Thuringia of the left party Die Linke is slowing down.

Even from the point of view of the party leadership, there are rumors about the restriction of freedoms that the proposed restrictions would entail. Christian Lindner of the Liberal FDP cautions that economically disadvantaged traders may lose confidence in the state if the rules are introduced.

Fried beef and coleslaw

Therefore, Wednesday’s meeting may mean difficult negotiations. When the 16 state leaders and Merkel met two weeks ago, the discussions dragged on so long that shakes in the form of steak and cabbage salad were served.

However, the Federal Chancellor must not save herself from nightmares, as she recognizes a small need for sleep.
