Men’s clubs give up some support to help women’s clubs

The Covid pandemic has meant that soccer has benefited from SEK 159 million from the government support package, where 41 of those millions will be distributed by the Swedish Sports Confederation directly to the country’s clubs below the elite.

The federal board has now made a decision, after the preparation of the Swedish Elite Football and Elite Football Women interest organizations, on the distribution of compensation support (support for loss of income and increased costs) to the elite clubs of the country.

EFD clubs, ie women’s clubs, will receive 100 percent of the requested amount, while Sef clubs, men’s clubs, will receive a total of 41.5 percent of the requested amount.

– This distribution is possible thanks to the resignation of the Sef clubs to five million crowns that are destined to the EFD clubs to be able to obtain everything requested. It is very gratifying to see the solidarity that exists within Swedish football in this very challenging situation, says the president of the Swedish Football Association, Karl-Erik Nilsson.

– So it is a fact that men’s clubs still get significantly more than women’s clubs, but men’s clubs at the same time have lost more. Support is based on the income that clubs normally have, but that is lost in the pandemic, and there the difference between women and men is significant. This makes it even more important that in this vulnerable situation we work together and consider support from a gender equality perspective, something the government has also requested.

EFD President Annika Grälls:

– Many clubs live with small economic margins already in the initial situation – the pandemic has created a situation that is very difficult and increasingly difficult to handle. That it is a distribution that gives the women’s clubs the total amount they requested means a lot. We appreciate the dialogue we have had with the SEF and the decision we made; we know that SEF clubs are also severely affected by the effects of the pandemic, he says.
