Mellin: There will be zero crowns in the pay increase for care, here are the reasons

But there are many indications that this will not be the case.

Published:

At first, they were hailed as the heroes of the crown crisis who were allowed to work as slaves and cut their summer vacation short.

Now they are threatened not to receive a penny of salary increase.

That, of course, would be a scandal. A magnificent scandal.

The employers of the municipalities and regions of Sweden, SKR, want the new agreement with the union Kommunal to be innumerable. Therefore it should not contain percentages or crowns if employers get what they want.

Fackförbundet Kommunal, the second largest in Sweden, organizes, among other things, one of the largest professional groups in the world, auxiliary nurses. Its president, Tobias Baudin, foams with rage and threatens:

– They want a deal, which means there is no guarantee and it can mean zero crowns in salary increase..

Of course, it would be a scandal if his prophecy came true.. But most likely it will not happen. And the reasons are various.

1. Popular pressure. Healthcare employees, regardless of their professional affiliation, have been hailed as the heroes of the crown crisis.

Many, even most of us, have had to change during the pandemic. But none as much as the caretakers. Organizations reorganized in a short time, protective equipment was lacking, deficiencies in routines became evident, many fell ill.

The public often has a strong understanding that low-paying care jobs must be improved in terms of pay. But rarely has the support behind that demand been greater than it is today.

It is predominantly politicians who are employers in health care. That they can explain to both their employees and the voters that healthcare workers should be content with not getting a raise this year is incredible. I would like to say excluded.

2. The contract movement has just begun. The contracts for much of the labor market expired this spring. However, due to the virus epidemic, the deals were extended and the postponed deal movement of the year is only now beginning.

So it’s time for a shootout, as at the beginning of all the movements agreed. The distance between the parties is never as great as at the beginning of the wage movement. But when the starting points of the discussions are presented, the margins settle, positions that can be reversed later during the negotiations without much difficulty.

I need to hire more. Sweden’s population is growing, as is the need for care.

The elderly in Sweden are also growing in number, some speak of an explosion. This means that the need for care increases even more.

Therefore, municipalities and regions have a great need to hire more staff. To compensate those who retire and the need for care to grow.

In other words, they must become more attractive as employers. No employee wants zero crowns of pay increases. They then find their way to get away from the stingy yppers.

4. Numereless does not mean zero. The fact that the agreements lack figures does not necessarily mean that salaries remain at their previous levels. Instead, the new level is decided locally.

Kommunal has been in conflict several times in recent decades. But the strikes have not been very successful, despite public support.

This time, I don’t think I will get that far – although the fundamental conflict between employers and unions in the health sector is initially deep.

That Stefan Löfven (S) or Ulf Kristersson (M), who is a bourgeois majority on the SKR board, would argue that their party colleagues seem too modest, or non-existent, health care salary increases, I really don’t see it in front of me.

In addition, municipalities and regions, the old county councils, received several billion. Both in the government’s budget proposal next year and in the long list of the supplemental budget that was established in the spring and fall.
