The business community welcomes the extended testing in the two ski areas.

– The region has offered the opportunity to evaluate all staff on a weekly basis. So that we are safe and that guests continue to feel like we’re doing everything we can, says Therese Sjölundh, CEO of the destination company in Åre.

First out is Skistars staff, about 800 people. In recent weeks, seasonal employees accounted for a large part of the proportion of confirmed cases in both Åre and the Vemdal area.

Last week, Storhogna Högfjällshotell was forced to close due to crown outbreaks among staff. Even in Åre, the infection is notable among companies in the hotel industry.

– There have been many places where I have heard that the kitchen has had to close, etc., says Maria, who works in a hotel in Åre.

Last week, Storhogna had to close. Are you worried that it might happen here?

– Yes, you have that in mind, we don’t want it to close here either.

Yesterday, the Vemdalsskalet upper cabin was also forced to close due to an infection among staff and it is in the Vemdals area that the number of confirmed cases is increasing at the moment.

In Åre, on the other hand, you see a sharp reduction, from half of all cases in the week 7 region to 18 percent in week 9. Micael Widerström, infection control physician in the Jämtland Härjedalen region, says the reduction came after strong infection control measures.

– We see that the efforts and the massive monitoring of infections that have been carried out have an effect on the spread of the infection in the Åre area.

The extended test it also applies to other workplaces, such as hair salons and grocery stores. Infection control physician Micael Widerström believes the efforts will soon be visible in the Vemdal area as well.

– This, in my opinion, will disappear quickly even in Härjedalsfjällen now that the infection trace starts correctly. Employers and the hospitality industry work very intensively together to test as much as possible, track infections, isolate and quarantine. That is what works.

Maria working on a hotel in Åre also believes in more sampling.

– It’s great that you do. So you can see how dire the situation is, if there are people walking around with this without them noticing.
