Many speak ill of the Green Party

The Migration Committee, with representatives from the eight parliamentary parties, has been working for a year to draft new Swedish migration legislation that will replace the temporary law that was introduced in connection with the refugee crisis in 2015 and expires next summer.

On Tuesday, the committee’s report was presented to the Minister of Justice and Migration, Morgan Johansson (S). It is already known that the Social Democrats are behind the 26 proposals in the report, while the government partner, the Green Party, is only behind three of the proposals.

During the summer, the deputy has been in tough internal discussions about whether the party can continue to govern with S if the strict immigration policy is permanent. The deputy now wants to review the report before it is sent for consultation, while the Social Democrats want to forward the proposal in its current form.

Johansson: “Many speak ill of the Green Party”

During the press conference, Morgan Johansson was repeatedly asked how he viewed the Green Party’s position on the issue, but the minister avoided details about how the government should handle the investigation.

– There are many who speak ill of the Green Party on these issues now, but let’s remember that they managed to assume responsibility in 2015. In a way that few parties managed to do so. I’m sure we can solve the problem this time too, says Johansson.

The Migration Minister did not want to say when the proposals will be presented, but promised that the Riksdag would have drafted a new law before June 2021. He stressed that most of the proposals have a parliamentary majority behind them.

– First we must have a dialogue in the government. But proposals to be sent to the Riksdag must be submitted, Morgan Johansson tells Expressen.

The Green Party states that the proposals must be reworked before they are sent for consultation. Can it be relevant?

– I’ve seen it, but there is strong support in the Riksdag. If they are not submitted, the Riksdag can adopt the proposals on its own. No one escapes the situation.

– You have to remember that we have a schedule with which to relate. So we don’t have much time to rework a proposal, it will be difficult, but I don’t want to speculate more about it.

Do you know that the Green Party is threatening to leave the government over immigration?

– I have not heard of such threats, and I am convinced that we will also be able to solve this problem, just as we have solved many other difficult problems before.

Do you see any risk of not having a new team next summer?

– No, I don’t see that there is such a risk. We cannot keep the temporary law, but we cannot go back to the old Aliens Law, because then the risk of a new refugee crisis increases. All political logic suggests that we should be able to solve the problem.

The president: “Humane and legally safe”

The chairman of the Migration Commission, the chairman of the politically independent Court of Appeals Thomas Rolén, tells Expressen that the proposals presented are close to the current temporary asylum law, with some exceptions.

– The proposal is a kind of middle ground, you could say, and each sub-proposal has received a majority in the committee.

Do you have an opinion on how the committee report should now be handled?

– It is such a good report that you should submit it for consultation. If fully implemented, I believe we have a humane and legally secure immigration policy that can stand the test of time, says Rolén.
