Some 180 people have been rescued from a hotel in Mozambique since a jihadist group launched an attack in the city of Palma, near the border with Tanzania, earlier this week.
The inhabitants of the city were forced to flee into the forest and some sought refuge inside a hotel. In an attempt to evacuate people on Friday, several people died.
The Mozambican government has not made an official statement, nor has the military wanted to give details about the incident.
According to the human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW), the perpetrators are linked to a group called al-Shabaab, as is the Somali Islamist terrorist group.
The province of Cabo Delgado (Cabo Delgado) in northeastern Mozambique is rich in gas and mineral deposits and violence in the region has claimed more than 2,000 lives in recent years, according to the organization Event Data and Conflict Location armed (ACLED). Tens of thousands of people have also been forced to flee their homes due to the unrest.
