After a period of lull, covid falls at Södra Älvsborgs hospital in Borås are increasing again.

Eight patients were admitted over the weekend and the hospital has worked hard to track down the infection.

– So far we don’t see any patterns, but you could say there are all kinds, says chief physician Nina Widfeldt.

For several weeks, few corona patients have been cared for at Södra Älvsborg Hospital.

But now the trend is reversing: eight patients have been admitted over the weekend, meaning nine are being treated at the hospital, something Borås Tidning was the first to report on.

One of the patients is in the intensive care unit.

– This was a wake-up call for healthcare and the surrounding community. The important thing is that we realize that we have an ongoing pandemic and that everyone takes responsibility, says Nina Widfeldt, acting chief physician.

On Tuesday it was investigated whether patients may be connected to a particular place or event. Previously, there was the theory that the increasing number of hospitalized patients could be related to the municipality of Tranemo in southeastern Borås, where the number of confirmed cases increased markedly during week 36. But Nina Widfeldt can now reject such a connection.

– We do not judge it was a cluster infection. Tranemo has had good control of its spread so it feels safe, says Nina Widfeldt.

Instead, hospitalized patients should be of different ages and come from different parts of the region.

– We have those who have been in the store and those who have gone to hen parties. There are all kinds, you might say, says Widfeldt.

Isn’t that worrisome?

– Both and you can tell. It is sad with local sprouts because it means that you have failed in that place. This indicates that there is a spread in society at large and that is what it sounds like.

The Södra Älvsborgs hospital has returned to its normal organization since the beginning of September and the increase this weekend will not imply any change at that level.

– The health system of the region has the attitude that we must prepare for the new normal and ten hospitalized patients are within that framework, says Nina Widfeldt and adds:

– But of course we hold meetings on this continuously and if it increases to 24-25 people, we have a different situation.
