At least 22 people are said to have died in the accident, which occurred in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine.

At least 22 people have died after a military plane crashed in Ukraine, the country’s Interior Ministry said. Two people were said to have been injured and four remain missing.

On its Facebook page, the Ukrainian Air Force writes that it is an Antonov An-26 type plane that crashed in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine. In addition to the crew, several cadets must have been on board the plane.

The accident, said to have occurred in connection with the landing, occurred shortly before 9 a.m. local time. The fire at the scene of the accident could be extinguished by the rescue service.

On his official Facebook page, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj writes that a state commission will be appointed to investigate how the accident occurred. The president also offers his condolences to the relatives of the deceased.

“We apologize for the pain to the relatives and friends of the dead. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” the president wrote on his Facebook page.
