As the crown pandemic has become an increasingly natural part of everyday life, the funeral industry has adapted. Several solutions will help family and friends to carry out memorial ceremonies and say goodbye within a reasonable time after death.

In recent months, work has been done to ensure that the separation can also be adapted to the crown. Fewer people are invited, people in risk groups are allowed to stay at home, everything is broadcast live, various ceremonies are held in the open air, and there is no extensive or closed cafe moments later.
– For a few months, you choose to have ceremonies again. We have now lived in the pandemic for a long time and everyone knows what applies, says Ulf Lernéus, union director for the Swedish Funeral Home Association.
When the corona pandemic broke out, the situation was completely different. At first, the funerals were advanced with the belief that the storm would end a few weeks later; instead, restrictions came.
– There were many who were announced two, three times. It was an incredibly difficult time for the affected families.
A cremation or coffin burial must take place within one month after death. In most cases, the funeral is usually held in connection with this, but during the last five months different variants have emerged. Some are cremated, but the urn is not buried, while a memorial service is awaited.
Others hold a small funeral with the closest circle, then organize a memorial service in the cemetery.
Postponed ceremonies have been particularly challenging in the Greater Stockholm area and according to Ulf Lernéus, there are now a large number of urns on the ground waiting for the crowd rules to be released and the situation to improve.
Svante Borg, Head of Administration of the Stockholm City Cemetery Administration, partly shares this view:
– We have more urns now than we usually have at the moment, but look in front of us that we should be able to handle this and relatives should be able to bury during the fall in good condition.
Above all, these are relatives who want to say goodbye for the last time in Skogskyrkogården in the south of Stockholm, a popular place for funeral ceremonies.
– Many people want to bury their urns there. To get that time, you may have waited a couple more weeks.
As part of the reduction in wait times, they have started offering weekend and evening hours, but without much success.
– I would probably say that it is about wanting good times that fit with the children’s collection and working hours and that has repercussions.
– At the beginning of the year, the funeral ceremonies were incredibly affected and stopped a lot. Now we see that you immediately request to be cremated and a change from the ceremonies and collect significantly less.
Emotionally, waiting times can also have a huge impact, notes Ulf Lernéus:
– Having a ceremony so far can be different. You may have reached another place in your pain. Currently, there are many who have not been allowed to say goodbye, especially if it is someone who died in covid-19 in a nursing home, for example. So you may not have even seen your loved one for the last time.
– It’s human to want to say goodbye.
