Police hold up a sign warning that it is illegal to protest in Hong Kong.
At least 60 people have been arrested in Hong Kong, according to police. The protesters wanted to march in protest of the security law in connection with China’s national day that falls on Thursday. But police have banned the protest, citing causes related to the virus.
– It is the national day of China, but the day of the death of Hong Kong, says a woman dressed in black, Joy, as she passes the police.
– The people of Hong Kong are under great pressure, but we must try to keep fighting for freedom.
The controversial Security Law, enacted by the Beijing People’s Congress, came into effect this summer. The law is seen as a sign of the Chinese dictatorship’s tightening of control over the more democratic Hong Kong, and has been met with widespread criticism.
The Security Law means that anyone found guilty of subversive activity, separatism, terrorism and contact with foreign forces runs the risk of severe punishment, in some cases life imprisonment.
