Fifth additional minute.

Then the tension exploded.

And Manchester United secured victory on penalties in the last second against Brighton.

After 90 minutes of play, Manchester United went 2-1 in the away game against Brighton. Then an already hectic battle became even more dramatic.

In the fifth extra minute, Solomon March tied with a 2-2 nod after a play by midfielder Adam Webster. The home team cheered, but the guests managed to create another corner.

They fought, Harry Maguire nodded and Brighton thought he had secured victory when the referee’s final signal echoed over the empty Amex Stadium. But the guests waved their hands, the judge wanted to see the situation for himself and did not trust the video review room. And in the pictures you can see how Maguire’s head movement is controlled over the arm that covers Neil Maupay’s arm in the air.

“It’s a theft”

Bruno Fernandes approached the penalty spot, surely scoring the winning goal with the last shot of the Premier League event. 3-2 to Manchester United against Brighton who had five frame shots.

– It’s a theft. Why should we try to sit here and mitigate what we have seen? Imagine being Graham Potter (Brighton’s coach), imagine being Brighton – putting on such an outstanding performance and getting nothing, says expert Bojan Djordjic on the Viasat broadcast.

Back to the regular 90 minutes of the game. There, United ended up at a disadvantage at the end of the first half. With a “panenka”, forward Neil Maupay set the first goal from the penalty spot. Goalkeeper David de Gea got frustrated and fired the ball at the shooter during the Frenchman’s celebration. Where he, among other things, made the goal gesture of “mocking cry”.

– It’s just a question of asking any goalkeeper, at any level. It’s irritating, you don’t want a penalty to pass you, especially with this chip, says Djordjic.

“You can’t do that”

Bruno Fernandes was the first to reach the corner, but his header was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Djordjic made a spectacular save. Furthermore, he says Manchester United avoided another expulsion shortly after. Nemanja Matic was the scorer and put a hand in Aaron Connolly’s run towards him. The midfielder issued a warning.

– Matic must be very happy that the referee did not remove the red card, so you should not. If it is not difficult, it is intentional. You know Connolly is coming, raise your elbow. And he probably should have had a red card considering the tough line the judges would draw with their elbows and hands against their face, Djordjic says.

Rashford scorer

Just before the halftime break, United tied. Fernande’s free kick hit Matic, he spliced against Harry Maguire but Lewis Dunk was last on the ball and an own goal for Brighton.

Then after the break the home team received another penalty, but after a video review the referee changed his decision: there was no penalty and Paul Pogba got rid of his warning.

A few minutes later, United completed the change. Not in the 52nd minute, when Marcus Rashford’s goal was disallowed for offside. But three minutes later he took revenge. Fernandes gave Rashford a good lead pass, the forward then luring his defender across the grass, then fired again as Ben White got up, then pushed 2-1 for cover.

And after extra time, United won 3-2. The team’s first win after a 1-3 loss in the season opener against Crystal Palace last weekend.
