The clashes broke out Saturday night local time when a caravan of up to 600 cars with Trump supporters drove through downtown Portland and met with protesters from the Black Lives Matter movement who held their own rally, the AP writes.
A man was shot and killed, but the circumstances surrounding the death were initially unclear. According to the New York Times, two witnesses say some people argued with each other and that someone opened fire.
The man they shot must have carried a hat with a symbol belonging to Patriot Prayer, a far-right organization that has been in conflict with counter-protesters in the past, the New York Times and the AP report.
Local police confirm that they heard shots and that a man was found with a gunshot wound to the chest, but did not come out with any information about the assailant. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, taking hundreds of protesters away by truck.
Portland has had major clashes for several months after George Floyd’s death during a police intervention in Minneapolis in May.
