BRUKSVALLARNA. This summer, Maja Dahlqvist was mentally down.
Today he won the Swedish sprint premiere, by far.
– It was really fun. Sickly funny and very nice she says
– It feels warm in the heart, says national team coach Anders Byström.
It was a very favorite event for the sprint stars of the national team in the semifinals.
Linn Svahn and Jonna Sundling, who dominated the World Cup sprint competitions last winter, never reached the final in the difficult conditions of the classic Bruksvallarnas sprint.
But Sweden has several strong sprinters on the women’s side. The best of the final were: Maja Dahlqvist, who beat Anna Dyvik and Hanna Falk by a clear margin.
“Go back and start over”
After the great 2018/19 year, Maja Dahlqvist had a slow season last year.
– Now I feel like I’m going back a bit to the level I was two years ago and it’s a lot more fun then, he says.
But the summer has still been tough. Private events kept the ski star silent. Finally, he had to press the reset button.
– There are very different things. Both physically and mentally it has been tough. I finally got to a point where it all caught up with me and I had to go back and start over. But it was only to accept the situation and little by little it has been improving. Fall has still been good, he says.
– It’s a lot of fun to compete when things are going well, he says laughing.
National team coach Anders Byström is impressed by the way Maja Dahlqvist changed the preseason.
– We have talked a lot about her mental difficulty this summer and she has done a great job with it, she recovered and regained her confidence, she says.
“Extreme speed”
He himself was not surprised by the victory:
– She has proven to be strong in the last two camps, we were not surprised. It has extreme speed and has also shown itself well in slightly longer races, says Byström.
On the men’s side, it was a victory for Oskar Svensson against Calle Halfvarsson and Marcus Grate.
Oskar Svensson, who like Maja Dahlqvist leads for Falun-Borlänge, had established himself better than earlier in the day and kept his promise to his clubmate.
– He had promised Maja beforehand that he would win if she won. I felt like I had to … says Oskar Svensson.
