Maja Sjöberg looks out the door of the nursing home. The door opener has mouth guards and visors, but Maja herself is not very fond of mouth guards.

He takes it off for photography:

– I have not been in the magazine before, he says.

In April, he turned 104. Despite his advanced age, he is alert; All he complains about when we meet is that it’s cold outside the door. The rest of us are four or five meters apart, it is as close as we can be under the prevailing circumstances.

Granddaughter Ellika Custhag says Maja has some short-term memory problems, but is otherwise fine.

– It will be a somewhat special conversation but she is very positive, happy and keeps up, says Ellika Custhag.

Age is the main risk factor

But a few weeks ago, Maja Sjöberg got sick. It turned out to be covid-19.

– We worried a lot and the family email chain got heated. We have barely been able to meet her during the year, so it would have been very sad if she had passed away, says Ellika Custhag.

According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, age is the main risk factor for serious illness and death if you get sick from Covid-19.

In March, special recommendations were introduced for all people over 70: they would avoid contact with other people. Since then, the recommendation was dropped because some groups felt mentally ill.

Visiting nursing homes has also been banned on several occasions. Between December 23 and January 12, all visitors to Gothenburg nursing homes are banned from visiting, in response to the increasing spread of the infection in Västra Götaland.

Early Christmas present: declared healthy

Maja Sjöberg had several symptoms: fever and cough. But after a few days it changed. She got better and better and by the fourth of Advent she had been asymptomatic for several days.

On Monday, just three days before Christmas Eve, the long-awaited news arrived: she was no longer sick with covid-19, but completely healthy.

– It feels very good. It has survived the Spanish flu, two world wars and now crown. It’s absolutely fantastic, says Ellika Custhag.
