Macron on the murdered policemen: they are our heroes

Shortly after midnight, two police officers arrived at the secluded home following an alarm about domestic violence. A woman had taken refuge on the roof of the house. When the police tried to help her, a man in his 50s opened fire on the patrol.

One policeman was killed while the other was hit in the thigh. The perpetrator then set the house on fire before shooting two more policemen, who arrived to help their colleagues.

According to a police source, the man was “heavily armed, with a rifle and two pistols.”

The perpetrator fled the crime scene. Some 300 police officers searched for the suspect for several hours, before they found him dead in his car. He was already known to the police through a custody dispute in which he was involved.

If terrorist acts are excluded, it is the first time since 2012 that French police officers have died in the line of duty.

“Our police risked their lives to protect us. They are our heroes,” President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter.

The woman who raised the alarm could be rescued, along with her son, and is now safe.
