The two cruise giants, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore, can carry up to 4,000 passengers and 1,700 crew each when they travel the world’s oceans.
But due to the corona pandemic, cruises are canceled around the world while ships and crews remain.
On Thursday the ships arrived in Gothenburg and are now indefinitely anchored off Vinga.
– Although the market is dormant, they still have contracted crews on board, says Åsa Kärnebro, port captain at Gothenburg AB port.
Detained in Denmark by the rules of the crown
The reason they came here is that crew members who have been on board for a long time, some close to a year, must disembark.
– They should have gone to Denmark. But due to the rules of the crown, they were unable to create a pattern there. Instead, they opted to go to Gothenburg to bring their crew ashore, says Åsa Kärnebro, harbor master at the Port of Gothenburg AB.
In total, about 200 crew members, the so-called security crew, have been on the ships. About 50 of them are transported from the pier directly to Gothenburg Landvetter Airport by bus.
– There are absolutely no quarantine vessels and there is absolutely no infection on board. These people have not been ashore for many months, but only on boats where they have not met anyone else, says Åsa Kärnebro.
