Lund University breathes new life into the old Kockum buildings in Varvsstaden. It is now clear that the university has signed a collaboration agreement with Varvsstaden AB to create a new campus for the Academy of Music, the Academy of Theater and the Academy of Fine Arts.

The intention is that the University of Lund will transfer its training in art, music and theater to the same geographical location. In a total of approximately 16,000 square meters, students will receive their education in two historic buildings; Maskinhallen and Vagnsverkstaden. Where previously shipyards and rail cars were manufactured in Varvsstaden, in the future it will be a creative campus for around 800 students. Planning for the next reconstruction and renovation will begin soon.

– The Faculty of Arts is very happy that the collaboration agreement with Varvsstaden AB is now ready, especially since they have extensive sustainability planning that is completely in line with the development we want to see for our new campus. The agreement means that we are entering a new phase in the project and later this fall we will start working more concretely with the architects, something we are eager to do, says Anna Lyrevik, dean of Lund University.

Planning for the move to the Varvsstaden facility begins immediately and plans are made for a move in 2025/26.

– The fact that Lund University now chooses to locate parts of its education in Varvsstaden means a lot for the area and takes the development of the district in a new positive direction. Our ambition is for the district to simmer with life and movement and this will be a perfect piece of the puzzle in the mix of activities that we strive for. The buildings you are moving into are great for the specific business. The engine room, for example, has incredible space, which opens up unique opportunities to design training facilities, says Pia Andersson, CEO of Varvsstaden AB.

Varvsstaden is an urban development project run by a joint venture consisting of Peab and Balder, in the middle of central Malmö, where Kockum Industries previously operated. Currently, there are many ongoing projects in Varvsstaden. New homes are being built, old buildings are being converted into modern office properties, and new roads, corridors and bridges are being built.

The engine room today.
