Färjestad eliminated the goalkeeper with three minutes to go, then Luleå decided immediately.
Subsequently, the FBK coaches defend their decision.
– This is something we have discussed as a trio of coaches, says head coach Johan Pennerborn.
Luleå and Färjestad received the most votes when SHL coaches tipped their Swedish Championship gold champions before this season. Both teams have reinforced their troops with new acquisitions. In Luleå, however, there have been some questions about the goalkeeper issue when the successful Joel Lassinantti left for the Russian KHL.
But at Saturday’s premiere, 35-year-old David Rautio showed that he absolutely has the measure as the first goalkeeper. He stopped 30 of 31 shots and had several sweaty parades.
I chose the doorman early
The great sandwich, however, became something more. Namely, the decision of the FBK coach, Johan Pennerborn, to remove the goalkeeper with three minutes remaining.
FBK had lost 0-3, but the opportunity was given through two late goals. But when the goalkeeper was chosen, it was only a few seconds before Karl Fabricius scored 4-2 (the final result) in the open area.
– With the results in hand, it is easy to criticize the decision. I probably would have stayed with the goalkeeper for at least a minute and a half more. I thought Färjestad was in such a strong phase and had the advantage in the match, says expert Staffan Kronwall in C More.
“Seizing the opportunity”
Later, Johan Pennerborn defends his decision.
– When the clock starts ticking with less than four minutes to go, we reason like this: if we have the opportunity, we will seize it. Now we also had a fixed situation (technology in the offensive zone, editor’s note). It’s so easy that time flows away from you and then you hear, “Why didn’t you get the goalkeeper out earlier?” Now we decide to take it early. This is something we have discussed, we as a trio of coaches, he says on C More.
In Luleå, Linus Klasen returned and made his first SHL game since the 2013/14 season. He excelled at one point and was pleased with his own effort.
– It’s just a matter of moving your legs all the time, so there are no problems. Good to be back, says Klasen.
