The decision that the Hörby municipality will not allow the pride flag sparked strong reactions.
Several thousand people have commented on the municipality’s posts on social media with flags of pride.
– It feels like a love bombardment, says Mattias Präntare, communicator of the municipality.
On Monday, the Hörby municipal council decided that the municipality will no longer fly the pride flag. The precedent with which the president of the municipal board, Cecilia Bladh de Zito (SD), justified the decision was that they believe that the flag is not addressed to everyone in the municipality.
He quickly left his mark on the municipality’s social networks. They have been filled with thousands of posts showing love messages. The communicator of the municipality Mattias Präntare has followed the reactions, but does not want to comment further on the decision.
– As a communicator, I interpret it as an evocative of emotions, he says.
The municipality has seen all posts to review so nothing inappropriate has been posted.
– We have counted and only on Instagram we have at least 12,000 publications. Most are pretty pride flags and memes, he says.
Unusual response
It is not uncommon for the municipality for some reason to receive such a response.
– We haven’t seen anything like it. We are a small rural municipality that has to fight to get diffusion and attention when we have an event, for example. Of course, this stands out, says Mattias Präntare.
Marie Stenbeck, a resident of Hörby, is one of the people who have reacted to the ban on the flag. He experiences great irritation among the residents of the municipality.
– There is no one who agrees with this that I know and with whom I have spoken. This is not a democratic decision, he says.
Now he wants to involve local entrepreneurs.
– I will speak with shops and restaurants here in town to ask if they can imagine having flags next to their facilities, says Marie Stenbeck.
Aftonbladet has sought out the president of the city council Cecilia Bladh in Zito (SD). She could not be reached for comment.
