Police, ambulances and rescue services were alerted to the Hagakliniken health center on Första Långgatan in central Gothenburg on Wednesday at 11 o’clock on Wednesday morning.

– There were several people who called and raised the alarm about a strong blow. It is something that has exploded in a multi-story property, but it is not clear what it is, said Thomas Fuxborg, a police spokesman in the West region, shortly after the alarm.

According to the police, the explosion took place inside the Hagakliniken facility.

– I’m standing here with the police right now and talking about what happened. I’m very surprised, says the owner.

Thomas Fuxborg says, among other things, that the windows were smashed in connection with the explosion.

– We don’t know much at the moment. We tried to create a situational picture of what happened, says Thomas Fuxborg.

According to GT, the explosion took place inside a bathroom.

Two people taken to the hospital

Police technicians entered the building together with the national bomb squad, which was able to establish in the place that there was nothing explosive left in the room.

– There is no explosive left in the room, says Stefan Gustafsson, press spokesman for the police in the western region.

When the police determined that there was no explosive left in the room, the roadblocks were lifted.

Two people were taken to the hospital after the explosion. One of the people has serious injuries, it is a woman of about 85 years.

The other injured person is a woman in her 40s, her injuries are minor according to Sahlgrenska.

– There is some kind of devastating damage to one person and an effect on the hearing of the other, says Gustafsson.

A witness told GT that police have cordoned off several apartment buildings in the area and that residents are now locked up.

A secondary school was also evacuated, in connection with the explosion.

– From what I understand, the entire building has been evacuated. In any case, we have sent our students home for the day and no teaching will take place today. We’ll see how we do it on Wednesday. It may still be cordoned off then, says Paula Hammarskog, director of security at Academedia, who runs the high school.

She says that in the event of an obstacle, distance learning will be relevant then.

Previous explosion on the same site

The rescue service and the police blocked the area and affected tram traffic on lines 3, 9 and 11, as well as car traffic in the area.

Police were alerted to an explosion at the same location three weeks ago and will be investigating whether there is a connection.

– Of course it is something we have with us in the investigation, but at the moment we cannot say if it has any connection, says Anna Göransson.

– It is part of our job to look at history and other things that can be linked to people or place, but it is too early to say anything about it now, says Stefan Gustafsson.

The incident is being investigated as widespread destruction, attempted murder, and violation of the explosives law.
