It was on Friday afternoon that a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck between Greece and Turkey.

The Turkish port city of Izmir is one of the places hardest hit by the earthquake.

It was also there that Lokman Basal, 78, was present when the earthquake struck.

Lokman Basal usually lives in Malmö but has traveled to Turkey to visit relatives.

He and his family were in the sixth floor apartment when suddenly the ground began to shake.

– I was on the balcony and my wife was in the kitchen. I yelled at him to go to the door. I tried to get there myself but fell twice. All the lights, all the loose objects flew off and broke, he says.

Describe that the earthquake lasted almost half a minute.

– You had time to think a lot during those seconds. You don’t know what to do, you are so helpless and scared.

I have not been able to return to the house

In the end, the company dared to go down the stairs and out into the street. Many people had gathered there. All members of Lokman Basal’s family survived unscathed, but are shocked and enthralled after the incident.

– Fear is inside me all the time. What do we do if it happens again?

The family has not been able to return home. Now they live with another relative further away, in a newly built house that feels safe.

– The street outside the house in Izmir is cracked and we don’t dare to enter the house. We think it will be a few weeks before you can come pick up your things.

Friday’s earthquake claimed at least 26 lives and injured about 800 people.
