Citizens must work and consume Sweden to emerge from the crown crisis, according to Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.
The government’s fall budget is expected to contain tens of billions in reduced taxes. Citizens must work and consume Sweden to emerge from the crown crisis, according to Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S).
Löfven says, in an interview with TT after a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, that he has a “pragmatic view of taxes.”
– If for a while you can contribute so that consumption can increase so that everyone can really get into that cafe that has had problems during the pandemic, we all contribute. I want to give everyone the opportunity to contribute to the strengthening of Sweden, he says.
Tax cuts criticized
As recently as in his August 23 summer speech, Löfven said that Social Democrats always put social welfare first, before tax cuts for the already well-off.
The budget is expected to include a tax cut that will give more to those with average wages and slightly lower wages. Retirees are expected to receive a tax cut starting next fall. However, the possibility of taking home service tax deductions for high-income individuals is increasing, and a proposal to reduce the state income tax for well-paid individuals has previously been submitted.
– If we say what we stand for and four will settle for something, you can’t get everything, says Löfven about the budget negotiations with the governing partner the Green Party and the Center and Liberal Party coalition parties.
The fall budget will be presented on September 21. Löfven does not want to be specific about the content, but the parties are said to agree on its main features.
“Rekordstark Budget”
– I am completely convinced that this is a record budget to be presented, record investments in wellness and what gets people to work.
He says there will be many efforts to increase public consumption.
– The most important thing to start working quickly is the consumption of well-being. School, elderly care, healthcare – where we need more employed people, then you create jobs quickly and strengthen well-being. But investments are also needed.
In February this year, when the crown pandemic had yet to put shootings and gang crimes aside, the prime minister indicated in interviews that tax cuts from the Alliance government had contributed to the problems. Do you stick to that analysis?
– No analysis is that simple, but on the other hand it is very important to ensure that there are resources for a socially sustainable society. People are going to work, we are investing in it, now, after the pandemic, everyone must participate and ensure that Sweden comes out of the crisis. It’s important, says Löfven.
The police are under pressure
This week, the Chief of the National Police, Anders Thornberg, warned in an open letter or statement that the police are under heavy pressure and that “the development of violence is extremely serious.” He called for society to end up behind the police.
“We work intensively, twenty-four hours a day, even as severe violence continues,” Thornberg wrote.
The Aftonbladet editorial page asked this week if the government is asleep.
– It’s just to go back to the last legislature and see what has been done since we took office, more police are being trained and we have added two new police trainings, we increased the penalties, 50 penalties, there was nothing ready when we entered the Offices of Government (2014), the Prime Minister defends himself.
He adds that the address is correct, but it is not enough.
– The problem is still great, this is a poison in our society that is leaving. But it requires the efforts of an entire society. We must work together so that young people, especially children, do not choose crime.
