As DN previously reported, the corona crisis has hit the film industry hard with stopped recordings, changes of plans and postponed premieres.
This especially applies to the new film adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg’s “The Emigrants”, which was largely planned to shoot in the Czech Republic. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the recording had to be moved to the Västra Götaland areas.
With the departure of Liv Ullmann Erik Poppe’s “Emigrants” suffers a new setback. Ullmann played the iconic role of Kristina de Duvemåla in Jan Troell’s classic 1971 film adaptation. The idea was that the Norwegian actress would now have played Kristina’s mother in the remake.
Since she belongs to one of the covid-19 risk groups, Liv Ullmann decides to quit the project. Producer Fredrik Wikström Nicastro regrets the decision, but believes it eventually became inevitable.
– The closer we got to getting started, both Liv and her partner, who is also in their 80s, felt that it became too risky to get involved in a big film production with all that that entails. For the older group, it is still about life and death. It is very sad for us, life is really a symbol of “The Emigrants” and the meaning of history. We hope to keep her involved in other ways within the project, says Fredrik Wikström Nicastro.
Liv Ullmann is replaced by Lena Strömdahl, who became known as Yvonne Dahlén in the long-running “Rederiet” and has since had roles in everything from “Bron” to “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”
The main roles as Kristina and Kar-Oskar are played by Lisa Carlehed and Gustaf Skarsgård. The cast also includes Sofia Helin and musical artist Tove Lo, who is making her acting debut.
