She strangled a very pregnant woman.

Then he cut out the baby and showed him as his own.

Lisa Montgomery, 52, now the first 67-year-old woman to be executed by the United States government.

The murder occurred in Skidmore, Missouri, on December 16, 2004. The victim, Bobbie Jo Stinnett, 23, was eight months pregnant. Together with her husband, she ran a kennel and it was through her that she met her killer.

Lisa Montgomery, then 36, had contacted Bobbie Jo Stinnet on the Internet. She pretended to be interested in buying a terrier puppy and also lied saying she was pregnant too.

Several months earlier, she had met Bobbie Jo Stinnet at a dog show and according to witnesses she was admiring her budding pregnant belly.

Lisa Montgomery was convicted of strangling Bobbie Jo Stinnet from behind with a neon pink rope. Then he cut up and kidnapped the baby.

According to US media, she had deceived everyone around her, including her boyfriend, telling him that she was pregnant herself.

“I had no idea he wasn’t our son,” Kevin Montgomery said when his girlfriend was later arrested.

He picked up her and the boy after the Missouri murder and drove them to his home in Melvern, neighboring Kansas.

Lisa Montgomery and her boyfriend showed the boy to their friends and the local pastor at a cafe, among other things. Hours later, she was arrested.

Traced via computer

Police located her after searching Bobbie Jo Stinnet’s computer and DNA tests were able to confirm that the girl was not Lisa Montgomery’s.

Who miraculously survived the baby and already a week later was reunited with her father Zeb who called her Victoria Jo.

Kevin Montgomery, who was not suspected of any crime, expressed his sympathy for the girl’s family.

– This must be at least as difficult for them as it is for me. I hope you receive as much support from your church and its surroundings as I do. We will all need it, he said.

Victoria Jo was taken from the womb of her murdered mother. Miraculously, he survived.

The lawyer protested

Lisa Montgomery was sentenced to death in Missouri in 2007 under a federal law on kidnapping cases in which the victim was transferred from one state to another.

His attorney Kelley Henry protested the death sentence, referring to the fact that his client was abused while growing up and suffered from mental illness:

Lisa Montgomery has long assumed full responsibility for her crime and will never get out of jail. His severe mental illness and the devastating consequences of his childhood trauma make the execution a profound injustice.

Lisa Montgomey is now the first woman to be executed at the federal level, by decision of the United States government, since 1953 when Bonnie Heady was gassed to death after being convicted of kidnapping the son of a millionaire.

The execution is scheduled for December 8 by an injection of poison at the Federal Prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

This year, after a 17-year hiatus, the US government carried out seven federal executions. Lisa Montgomery will be the eighth and another is planned.
