Employees and trainees bear witness to a lousy work culture at clothing giant NA-KD with unpaid work, long workweeks, sexist and racist jargon.
Now, many influencers are discontinuing collaboration with the fashion site. One of them is Therése Lindgren.
– I strongly disassociate myself.
It all started last week with influencer Rodja Pazooki asking her followers on Instagram for advice after they asked her about a collaboration with clothing company NA-KD. Shortly afterwards, the testimonies collapsed.
Hundreds of former NA-KD employees and trainees speak out about poor working conditions.
One of them is Elif Abay, 22, who recently decided to end her internship with the fashion giant, due, among other things, to unreasonable demands made on her during her unpaid internship.
– I felt that I was not allowed to make a mistake. I worked both weekdays and weekends. My hand swelled up and turned completely blue because I sat in front of the computer a lot and had stress eczema on my face.
After Elif Abay consulted a doctor in an emergency, she was summoned to a meeting with company officials.
– During the meeting they said they were going to ask me and that I would have 160 deals, it’s a lot of work.
“They said they lost money on me”
160 collaborations, the so-called agreements, would generate 1 million SEK in sales. Elif Abay felt the company placed unreasonable demands on her as an intern.
– They wondered if this is really the right workplace for me. They said that the company had lost me money and that they had contacted Human Resources. I was absolutely stunned.
In the end, Elif decided to prematurely end her internship at NA-KD. Aftonbladet has been in contact with most former employees and trainees who testify about similar incidents, but say they have not dared to testify before for fear of retaliation from the company.
Therése Lindgren: “I strongly dissociate myself”
Now several influencers are roaring, including Therése Lindgren, one of Sweden’s biggest influencers with over 1 million followers on both Instagram and Youtube. On his Instagram, the influencer writes and refers to the countless stream of testimonials that flowed after Rodja and Elif’s initiative on Instagram earlier this week.
“For me, decent working conditions and social sustainability are extremely important, and obviously I strongly dissociate myself from all kinds of racist, sexist, homophobic or abusive discrimination,” Therése writes, referring to testimonials about NA-KD on Instagram.
Following the criticism, NA-KD CEO Jarno Vanhatapio responded to the criticism through a message on his Linkedin page. The company has also announced that they are pausing their internship program and will designate an internal investigation. Aftonbladet has also sought out Jarno Vanhatapio.
