Liberals: three billion for the suburbs

The billion dollar investment is based on a budget agreement between the government, the Center Party and the Liberals.

– Integration debt is increasing. We have 500,000 foreign-born adults with very small incomes living at risk of poverty, says Nyamko Sabuni.

– Sweden does not have tools to facilitate the integration of those who come to our country.

Focus on elementary schools

The addition means a significant investment in schools, especially primary schools, in vulnerable areas of Sweden.

– When children do not manage their primary school, the lifestyle remains to enter into criminal activity, says Nyamko Sabuni during a press conference on Friday.

– What we see in these schools is that the staff turnover is very high and the leadership, that is, the principals, is changed annually.

The goal is to attract more trained teachers to elementary schools in vulnerable areas, among other things, reducing the number of students per class and ensuring the support of resources and special educators.

Municipalities must take care of more children

The money from the “suburban elevator” will also make it easier for municipalities to care for children living in “unsuitable family or living environments.”

“Municipalities often avoid caring for these children for economic reasons,” says Nyamko Sabuni.

– The state comes in with money to help municipalities better care for children who live in destructive home environments and residential areas.

Teaching Swedish in preschool

Nyamko Sabuni refers to a study that showed that children in vulnerable areas have a vocabulary of about 2,000 Swedish words, compared to the 6,000 Swedish words that children have in the rest of Sweden when they start the first year.

– We believe that the lack of language skills was part of what caused people in vulnerable areas to be more affected than others during the pandemic, and we must start early, says Sabuni.

The new initiative includes a “language boost” from Liberals for preschool.

The language gap means skill development for preschool teachers, as well as outreach activities for non-Swedish-speaking parents “who need to have their children in preschool to a greater extent,” says Nyamko Sabuni.
