As Lewis Hamilton he has won seven Formula 1 World Cup titles, the most recent this year. But the next time the Briton wins an F1 race, he should be called Sir Lewis Hamilton. The 35-year-old motorcyclist has been knighted.
Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton is honored here in Bahrain in November.
A seventh world title, infected by covid-19, a great bet for racism and diversity and voted by the British as the sports personality of the year.
2020 has been significant for Lewis Hamilton, who can now call himself “Sir” too. The motorist is one of many Britons who on the penultimate day of the year receive honorary awards or, like Hamilton, are honored.
Hamilton had eleven Formula 1 GP victories this year and now has the most partial wins of all time. His seventh world title also means he has touched all seven of Michael Schumacher’s World Cup victories in the sport.
But it seems to be at least Hamilton’s work for equality that is behind the award. He has been a champion of equality, anti-racism and diversity through his commitment to racing.
He will now be the fourth F1 driver to be ennobled. Three British F1 drivers have previously been knighted, following Britain’s Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart and Australian Jack Brabham.
Other athletes receiving awards from the Queen include footballers Jimmy Greaves, Ron Flowers and Gillian Coultard, all of whom receive the MBE Medal of Honor, the lowest tier of medals.
Flowers is the last player from England to win the World Cup in 1966 to be honored. Coultard was the first English player to play a hundred international matches.
A total of 1,239 people receive an award. In addition to politicians and people in the entertainment industry, this year 123 people who work in health care are honored.
In the entertainment industry, Oscar-winning film photographer Roger Deakins (“1917,” “Skyfall,” “Fargo”) and actress and charity worker Sheila Hancock both recognized.
The actor Lesley Manville, who in the next seasons of the television series “The crown” will play Princess Margaret, receives the imperial order CBE, Commander of the British Empire, and his colleague Toby Jones receives the OBE, Order of the British Empire, slightly lower grade.
Singer Craig David and Jed Mercurio, who are behind the television series “Line of duty,” each receive an MBE.
